How Often Do You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?

Anyone else still slightly shocked that it’s a new year? If feels like 2016 came out of nowhere and I can’t really figure out why. Literally the 10 second countdown for the ball drop started (anyone else love having low key nights and making Times Square a part of their NYE?) and felt so weird and I don’t know why! Maybe it’s because I wore jeans and was hanging out on a familiar couch with a bunch of friends, but something about it just felt like your average Friday night. In other respects it does seem like a new year – all the talk of resolutions, the JRINK 30-Day Challenge (more to come on this), trying to plan travel, and the other inevitable changes that come with a change in calendar.

While I’m not one for technical “new years resolutions,” there are still a few things that I like to remind myself to do more of or do better in the new year. A few of these have to do with my skin, and one of them is to be more diligent about cleaning my makeup brushes. Sounds silly, but it’s important!

Many experts say that you should wash your brushes every few weeks/once a month. This isn’t much when you think about the fact that it a) takes about 5 minutes to do and b) can do wonders for your skin. Ever thought about how gross it is that we use the same dirty brush to apply our makeup every day? Stuff just continues to get caked on, bacteria forms, and we put it right back on to our faces each morning. I use bareMinerals (this foundation and this finishing powder, if you’re curious) and got this brush shampoo with the starter kit I purchased when first trying out the brand. The brushes come out super soft and feel like new.

The best part about all of this is that you don’t need a fancy product to clean your brushes – some warm water and unscented bar soap or baby shampoo will do the trick – so no more excuses! The Everygirl has a great tutorial with photos if you’re excited to get cleanin’.

Anyone else have any makeup brush-related tips? I’m sure I do a terrible job of storing them and would love to hear how you guys keep yours in tip top shape!

  1. I cleaned my two brushes (I’m totally not fancy) last night, and I was thinking that I should make it a weekly routine rather than just a once-a-month thing (if that?!). I once read about a white vinegar/water combo, so that’s what I’ve been doing. I’m interested in the other items and articles you mentioned though. Brushes are so pricey, so I’d hate to ruin them!

Weekly sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to check out the vinegar/water combo when this shampoo stuff runs out…agreed that a little care seems to extend their lives a lot!

I use the same brushes and am so terrible at keeping my brushes clean :( they’re never the same once you’ve been using them for a while – even with cleaning them (or my attempt at it).

So true! Jordana recommends the water/vinegar combo, so that may be worth looking into (or the baby shampoo) if you want a cheap, quick fix :)
