It’s been a few since I shared any kind of life update of sorts over here, but for the first time in awhile, I feel like there are actual, significant things to update you guys on that I haven’t yet shared. Many of you have likely noticed that there haven’t been five new posts a week up in awhile…more like three, sometimes four (and sometimes two). Well, it’s finally time to talk about why! I’ll preface this by saying that this post doesn’t have a major point–it’s sort of just an update/brain dump to remind myself that while things feel absolutely nuts right now, it’s all good things that I’ll happily reflect on the long run.
First off, I’ve casually mentioned studying for the GRE–I’m planning to take the test in a few months to go back to school for an MBA. I work at a university that has a generous tuition remission program so you know, why not? Kidding…but I’ve actually always known that if I went back to school it would be business school, so was naturally excited about the opportunity to do so when I took this role. That being said, I still have to apply for the program, hence the GRE thing. In addition to studying, I’m currently taking my first class as graded but non-degree, so the credit can be applied to the program once I’m [hopefully] enrolled. It’s a nice way to get back into the academic mindset and evening classes, the latter of which I never had in undergrad.
GRE + school (for the first time in 3.5 years, woof), obviously take a lot of time and I’m definitely still getting settled into the newish routine. Working a full day and going to school right after is no joke! I’m definitely more of a morning person so having a class that ends at 9:40 isn’t fun…I hugely admire those who do this with jobs requiring lots of travel or having kids. How do you guys do it?!
Not so new are a couple of other things I haven’t really discussed over here (but keep teasing…sorry.) A little freelance project I’ve had for a while–since summer 2014, to be exact–is doing some consulting for Steph Boutique, an adorable little boutique in the town where I went to college. I met the owner, Steph, my freshman year…it’s the only great clothing store in town so you’d imagine how much we loved that! Steph carries a bunch of favorite brands–think Ella Moss, Splendid, Dolce Vita, etc. What I do for the store varies depending on the time of year, but it’s generally some social media posts and behind the scenes strategy (we’re launching a new product, and also working on ways to streamline the brand identity.) Somewhat similarly, I’ve been doing a little design internship of sorts with someone in the industry I’ve admired for years. Don’t want to share too much here right now, but basically my career goal is to be a website designer of sorts and I’m learning a lot about the client + administrative side as well as building technical skills. While I love my current job in email marketing and am learning so much from it, I want to make sure I’m continuing to gain knowledge and grow in the design space. Hopefully this + an MBA will have me incredibly well-equipped to fully tackle the small business world in a few years, beyond just the blog.
Lastlyyyy, J and I are moving in together at the end of the month! We’ve been together for about six years so it doesn’t come as a total surprise to those who know us (and I guess those who don’t, since six years is kind of a long time) but we’re obviously really excited about this next step. Of course a move entails a bunch of little logistics: switching over cable/internet, packing, mailing addresses, painting, buying new furniture, and going through everything we own because fitting two people’s stuff into <550 square feet won’t be easy :) I’m definitely going to be sharing things over here–we already have so many ideas and are currently trying to figure out what couch to get–so more to come!
Sooo what does this mean for the blog? I mean, not a whole lot that you haven’t already seen! I’m likely going to be posting three days a week now (this is a great way to follow along, if you don’t want to manually go to the site every day) and focus on the quality of my posts. A year ago if you’d told me I wasn’t going to be here five days a week I’d have said you were crazy, but I’m finally realizing that it’s okay to let my posting frequency and schedule change as the blog grows and evolves. This space is definitely not going anywhere, and I want to continue to build out content in new ways: sharing a little more personal stuff, DC-centric content, job/life stories, how to decorate and optimize a small apartment [while being respectful of your boyfriend’s preferences], etc. The reader survey from last year gave me a bunch of ideas and not trying to get a post up every day will allow more time for more of these types of posts. Any blogger will tell you that getting up a post of any kind takes way longer than it looks (I spent 45 minutes writing and re-configuring the text on the image above, for instance) and I’m realizing that to balance everything going on in my life right now, something has to give. The few hours saved by not posting twice a week will go to some “me” time and seeing friends, since grad school + the GRE have already seemed to monopolize any socializing time that previously existed :)
So yeah! That’s pretty much where things are right now. Please don’t view this as a rant/complain about how “busy” I am…that’s not the intention. I’m grateful for all these opportunities and happenings but those who know me know I’ve pretty much been in an autopilot daze since the holidays and I really need to get out of it.
In the meantime, I’m happily welcoming any and all tips on living with a boy because no matter what, there are bound to be a few challenges. I definitely plan to share pieces from the move and document the decorating process, but would love know what you guys want to see, too, both in the way of moving or just content in general. Let me know if there’s anything in particular in the comments below or via email at email@example.com!
PS: Guess who’s totally finally getting into Insta stories! Lots more day-to-day content to be shared there so follow along at @monicadutia :)
