Around Here Vol. VIII

Phew. It’s been a week, guys. Anyone else feel that way? Luckily my post-work plans have been minimal but I feel like it’s been a struggle to stay above water with lots of craziness at the 9-5 plus some freelance projects and a full inbox. All good things–being busy is way better than being bored–but I’m really ready for a breather. Good news, though: today’s post is comprised of some things I’ve been up to and think you’ll love, too!

Orange Theory Fitness: J and I bought an OTF membership this summer in advance of their new location on 14th Street. We’d tried our first class at the Rosslyn location (your first visit is free) and despite barely being able to walk for three days, were hooked. The new location opened at the end of August and we each have the 8-class/month pack…it seems like the perfect number so far and I can already feel myself getting stronger after each class. I’m going to do a more comprehensive, dedicated post to my experience with the workout (it’s a high intensity workout with intervals where you alternate between the treadmill, rower, and weights + TRX), but want to give it a few more weeks before diving in. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to me ( with any questions!

How I Built This: Katie introduced me to this podcast in the spring and I was instantly hooked. It’s by NPR, which is usually a good sign, and Guy Raz is such a great host. He interviews business owners, idealists, and innovators about their lives and paths–it’s pretty fascinating to hear about the upbringings of founders and beginnings of so many businesses we know and love today. Guests have included Alli Webb, Richard Branson, Sadie Lincoln (who founded barre3), Jenn Hyman of Rent the Runway, Jim Koch of Sam Adams, and so many more. I’d recommend this podcast regardless of your age or if the specific business/cause is interesting to you–nearly all of them will capture your attention and I’ve learned a lot about companies I hadn’t even heard of.

Trader Joe’s mini avocados: I think I mentioned these awhile back, but TJ’s sells these mini avocados that are the perfect portion for one meal. They come in a bag of six and are fairly priced (usually “mini” versions have a premium attached, but these don’t seem to) and it’s nice not having to save half the avocado, which typically happens because I rarely want the whole thing unless it’s for a specific recipe. I’ve been putting the minis on chicken taco bowls and on toast–highly recommend if you work in an office and pack your lunch!

Suits: I put off watching Suits for like two years because I knew I’d like it and get hooked…which wasn’t a bad thing, but I didn’t have cable at my last place and didn’t want to rely on watching something online each week. Well, I finally started it a few weeks ago and have been binging like crazy. It’s exactly what I love in a TV show: a perfect blend of drama, action, plot twists, romance, witty banter, and comedy, with pretty much zero violence. It’s hard not to like all the main characters and I can totally see why people are completely into it. Not to mention, royal family fans–Meghan Markle is awesome on the show and is totally already engaged likely about to be engaged to Prince Harry, which is so cool! The series is reportedly on its last season so this is a good time to start if you’re looking for a new show to watch.

Pixel Eyewear: Soon after graduation and after working in the “real world” for a few months, I went to the eye doctor after experiencing what I thought was declining eyesight. I’ve had 20-20 vision my entire life so just assumed I finally needed glasses, but he diagnosed me with “chronic dry eye syndrome” and pointed me to some pricey and weird eyedrops, which I haven’t been using as consistently as I should be. While the dryness was certainly an issue, I was regularly developing bad headaches due to a combination of way too much screen time (working 40 hours a week + all the hours on the blog, etc.) and fluorescent overhead lights (they make a difference!). Krista blogged about Pixel Eyewear a few weeks ago and I immediately ordered this pair in tortoise–you can read more about digital eye strain here, but wearing these has nearly eliminated my headaches and has definitely alleviated eye strain.

What have you guys been up to/loving lately? I have a couple of more personal posts coming up (and based on last year’s reader survey, most of you expressed interest in that kind of content and I admit to not having consistently delivered) and to be honest, am just really ready for cooler weather and all things fall. It’s easily my favorite season so fingers crossed it’s here to stay soon!

Ooh, I need to look for the mini avocados…I hate only eating half and then accidentally letting the rest go bad!

Exactly! It’s both a pain to store them (#firstworldproblems) and just easily so wasteful. The little ones are the besttt :)

I listened to the podcast with Sadie Lincoln last week and am so inspired to open a barre3 studio. Now I want to listen to all of them! Suits sounds like a show I’d really enjoy. Putting it on my list!
