If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a bit, you may remember me mentioning some new products from Bolthouse Farms over the past few months. I went to a breakfast with them last fall to celebrate the launch of their Plant Protein Milk, which is protein-packed beverage that’s marketed as an alternative to almond milk. The pea milk comes in four different flavors–Original, Vanilla, Unsweetened, and Chocolate–and what differentiates them from similar products is that the Plant Protein Milk contains more protein and 50% more calcium than regular milk. The Bolthouse team graciously sent us home with a few bottles after the breakfast, and J and I both quickly became hooked–I started drinking the chocolate one straight (it’s thick, so kind of functions like a post-dinner dessert) and adding generous splashes of the other three to my almond milk smoothies, and he started subbing them in place of almond milk for his post-workout protein shakes (Note: if you do this, use less milk than you would another liquid given the high protein content!)
My favorite part about these plant milks is definitely the added protein…I don’t consume enough of it on the day-to-day, so knowing that one serving of pea milk alone satisfies has 10g of protein is just comforting to me. I also try to add greens into all my smoothies or shakes, which is why a “normal” post-workout shake doesn’t always appeal to me (although some of those chocolate ones…YUM.)

I’ve been making green smoothies for years and while I opt for grapefruit juice over orange juice due to the lower sugar content in the former, it’s definitely a better choice nutrition-wise to pick a less sweet or unsweetened option so as to not cancel out the healthful benefits of getting three servings of fruits or veggies before 9am!
Chocolate Strawberry Protein "Milkshake"
- 1 cup strawberries (I used frozen)
- 1/2 cup spinach (I used frozen, but fresh would be ideal since it’ll blend better with the thick milk)
- 1 banana
- 1 cup Bolthouse Farms Chocolate Plant Protein Milk
- Handful of ice, if you used fresh strawberries
- 1 tsp chia seeds
Combine all ingredients in a blender (we have this one–it’s good for the price, just let frozen ingredients sit for a little longer before blending). You may need to pause and stir part way through, since the milk is thick and may need some help blending with frozen ingredients.
Top with chia seeds if desired. Grab a straw, pour, and enjoy!
