Has this week felt really long for anyone else? There’s no particular reason why on my end except for a couple of minor but unfortunate bumps on Sunday evening (including starting to make a large batch of egg salad and adding mayo, only to find out it expired months ago and having to toss the whole thing, and having a cut on my finger that got blood on our brand new couch) seem to have made things crawl along a bit. I’ve also had zero post-work plans aside from Orangetheory and pilates, which is a good thing since I’ll be out of town the next two weekends and this is a busy time for my freelance work with Sweet & Spark. I was planning on getting a post up yesterday with my favorite podcasts, but had really strong writers block come on and just decided to table it till next week and cut myself some slack.
On another note, can we talk about how good sports have been this summer?! With both the World Cup and Wimbledon happening on the heels of a Caps victory, it’s a good time of year depending on where your loyalties lie, I’m a big England fan (my best friend from home’s dad is British and he got me on board really early) so am really bummed about yesterday’s loss but simultaneously can’t wait for what’s hopefully a great final (alongside a Wimbledon final!) on Sunday.
Onto today’s news…
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale–where a ton of new fall items get temporarily marked down until August 5–kicks off today if you’re a cardholder. This is the only store credit card I’ll likely ever have…I only use it to get early sale access because many items actually sell out before the sale opens up to the public on the 20th. It’s hard to know whether or not things will get restocked (I remember a couple years ago, before I had the card, there was this Barbour jacket that they promised would get restocked after the pre-sale and it just never did and I was so sad) so if you’re able to shop now, order anything you have your eye on and take advantage of Nordstrom’s free shipping + free returns.
I like to stock up on basics that don’t often get marked down (you’ll see them below) and try not to get carried away because a lot of pieces actually end up going on a deeper sale by mid-fall. It’s obviously a gamble whether or not items will still be available, but I personally use the sale to refresh my closet essentials and pick up one or two more novel items that I love and would be sad to see out of stock later in the season. You can view the Nordstrom Anniversary sale whether or not you have a Nordstrom card and if you aren’t a cardholder, can come back and make your purchases next Friday. This sale gets blasted all over the blogosphere so in an effort to avoid inundating you guys, my plan right now is to update this post when I’m back from work tonight so there’s a widget with other great picks at the bottom, and I’ll get another post up next Friday once I’ve had more time to comb through things. In the meantime, my 10 top picks (many of which I own myself!) are below!
What I bought from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale:
Two everyday bras, one sports bra, this funnel neck sweater, a pair of lounging/errands leggings, and a pair of workout leggings. I may pick up a couple more things after perusing it more but am aiming to keep my purchases minimal again this year!
Update (Thursday afternoon): Also snagged these jeans and these jeans (hoping to keep one of them) and this racerback bra! I’d bought the bra a few weeks ago, hadn’t cut the tags, and noticed it was further reduced so will keep the new one.
Another update (Friday morning): I caved. I’d been planning to buy myself a nice hair dryer as a birthday present to myself (my current one is my mom’s 10 year old Conair) but talked myself out of it because I’ve picked up a couple indulgent items lately. But this t3 dryer has been on my radar for awhile, isn’t typically marked down, and Nordstrom was offering 10x points yesterday after their website mishap so here we are :)
P.S. There is now a “2018 Nordstrom Anniversary” page under “Shop” in my category bar–I’ll be adding things that catch my eye there, if you prefer to see more “live” updates throughout the sale and would prefer to shop everything in one place.
It definitely feels weird to be shopping for down coats right now, but this is the time to get the best selection and all sizes on sale! If you’re in the market for a basic warm coat that’s on the longer side, this is a great option.
This is my one “frivolous” purchase of the sale so far–I spotted it in the catalog and hope the quality is good IRL! It looks so cozy and I like that it can be dressed up or down.
None of my Barbour jackets have actually come from the Anniversary Sale since I got one in the fall of the year of the incident mentioned above, but they usually have a good basic option in the sale. Like I said, this one has sold out during the pre-sale in the past so if you have a Nordstrom Card, considering picking it up now. If not, check back next Friday–hopefully the restocks go better this time!
I picked a similar wrap last year and am so happy I did. A cashmere wrap had been high on my list for awhile but was deterred by the high price tag and fact that part of the appeal was for it to accompany me on [dirty] plane rides. I now wash cashmere in the most gentle, cold cycle in the machine–which meant I could wash this after flights and mid-winter without jacking up the dry cleaning bill! That sealed the deal and it’s been great to have a literal cashmere blanket + scarf combo when I travel.
These are my favorite brand of workout leggings! I will say that I’ve never tried Lululemon or Athleta, but I have also worn Gap, Old Navy, and J.Crew and Zella is consistently my favorite. The price point is great, too–I always buy mine during the Anniversary Sale when the most basic styles are also marked down. More novelty styles go on sale during the year but if you want a standard pair (I love the high-waisted crop for workouts and the full-length one for errands and lounging in the winter), this is the time to snag ’em! I’ve found it best to size down; I’m usually a 26 in denim but wear an XS in Zella leggings.
My go-to…I typically always buy a nude and a black in the sale! Unfortunately black doesn’t seem to be included this year but there is dark grey. If you aren’t picky, random colors (sadly not neutrals very often) get marked down periodically throughout the year but for the nude, this is a good time to buy.
I bought this long cardigan in last year’s sale and was really hesitant due to the price…until it came in. It’s so, so soft and quickly became part of my favorite travel + errands outfit as soon as the temperature drops. I usually wear it with leggings and a soft tee! P.S. Try a couple different sizes, if you can…mine also firmed up a bit after the first wash! This cardigan sold out so fast last year so snag it as soon as you can if you’re in the market.
If you’re going to buy something totally frivolous and indulgent in the sale, make it this candle set! I splurged on it two years ago and have been savoring them (i.e. burning them slowly) ever since.
If you are going to splurge on one pair of boots in the next five years, make it on a basic pair of Aquatalias. The brand has a cult following (Kate Middleton is a fan!) and I got my own pair early last winter and didn’t even reach for my other tall boots. They do run slim on the calf (which was helpful for me, as tall boots are often baggy on my legs) and are waterproof, which is incredible with inclement weather. The quality and comfort is unmatched–trust me! I’m on a tighter budget right now but otherwise would be picking up this gorgeous brown pair.
