Big news today! If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen this post last night where I announced our move to NYC. This has been in the works for about a year now and it’s hard to imagine the day is almost here. After almost eight years in this wonderful city, we’re headed north to make the Big Apple our new home. Below is a little more about our move…which is coming up next week!
Why we’re moving
In short, what initially prompted this move was my job with Dudley Stephens. I’ve been the graphic designer for almost a year now (pinch me–working for one of my all-time favorite brands!) and I applied for the position last fall because it was literally my dream job. I’d met the wonderful founders, Lauren and Kaki, as well as some of the team when the were in DC for an event and knew I had to throw my hat into the ring even though the job was located at the DS Townhouse in Greenwich, CT.
J and I have been talking about a move to New England or the tri-state area for awhile but planned to stay in DC for 2-3 more years before making our way up north. We love our life and home here (even though it’s under 550 square feet!) and figured we’d only move when we were ready for the suburbs. I ended up in a crossroads professionally and he’d been thinking about some changes, too, but we figured both could happen by staying where we were geographically. When I was offered the DS job, both of us were actually really excited about the idea of moving up our timeline–particularly if it meant being able to live in NYC for a year or two, which was something we’d never planned to do. Weirdly enough, some of our close friends actually left DC for NYC in the the past few years and many of our nearest and dearest reside in the area. It’s been sad watching so many friends leave the DC area and witnessing that change–particularly in the past two years–really prompted us to think about where we’d see ourselves living next.
Anyway, back to today…the plan was for me to work remotely in 2020–J’s job was keeping us here for the year–and I’d go up to CT a few times a month. Of course, Covid hit soon after that routine began and we all turned remote anyway! With hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel virus-wise, we decided to stick with our original timeline and make the move now, which is exactly when we’d have done it pre-Covid.
Where we’re living
We may the only people to move to NYC and end up with more space! Our new place is in Murray Hill (we wanted to be close to Grand Central since I’ll be commuting from there post-Covid) and is almost 800 square feet with 1.5 bathrooms! It’s still a one bedroom but we got a great deal due to rental prices in the city right now. Funnily enough, we toured a couple apartment buildings back in February when we were in the city together for a weekend, figuring that we may as well see what would available in our price range. Little did we know that the world was about to shut down! We rented this particular apartment sight unseen but visited the building back in the spring–plus, we had the best broker who FaceTimed us in for tours. Feel free to email me (email@example.com–I’m happy to pass along her information!)
When we’re moving
Next week! The countdown is very officially on and we started packing this weekend. Since we’ve known about the move for awhile, it’s been easy to cull down our belongings and slowly purge anything we were willing to part with over the past few months. Obviously the to-do list is still never-ending, but I’m grateful we’ve had so long to plan the best we could.
More to come on our new space and NYC life…thank you to everyone who left a nice comment yesterday and to those who have supported us along the way!
